WHY WE CURATED IT:
A coveted large Tank Basculante for those who find most Tanks too small, and who yearn for a high horology version with a F. Piguet ultrathin manual calibre (thinnest at the time, still one of the thinnest in the world). There are many Cartier Tank shape variations across 106 years, but only one with structural functionality! With a clever bracket-pivot architecture for flipping around to protect the glass/dial during sports (crystals were once more fragile). First launched in 1932, a year after JLC’s Reverso debut. Some say Cartier copied JLC, but we think one year isn’t enough to “copy”, improve on, start production, and begin marketing, distribution and retail. The flipping axis and mechanisms are totally different, executed with half the parts and thickness, with the bonus of an upright “desk clock” ability. The version here is the most affordable mechanical Basculante, with special editions and solid gold ones going for up to 6 figures! With an exquisite guilloche cream dial, excellent condition, fully overhauled in 2022 and many extras (see below). This one’s for aficionados!
CONDITION:
9.5/10, with minor hairlines. Crystal, dial and hands clean. Sharp caseback engravings. Various handmade bespoke straps, aftermarket buckle and Cartier deployant included. Movement overhauled and healthy with high amplitude, low beat error and accurate to ±5 secs/day averaged from 6 timegrapher positions.
