WHY WE CURATED IT:
Datejusts changed the face of watches in 1945, figuratively and literally. Dates used to be shown via pointers and scales, or as part of complicated full/perpetual calendars. DJs were first to combine automatic calibres, water-resistant cases and quick-glance date windows at 3 o’clock. These practicalities were all anyone needed, and copied extensively till today. DJs have had uninterrupted success for 80 years, with more variations than any Rolex model. The name “Datejust” is often cited to mean “just the date,” but really refers to “justified date”—watchmaking speak for instant change at midnight (another Rolex first). This variant is a little off the beaten path if the usual fluted bezels and jubilee bracelets are a little too bling and predictable for you. We particularly love the tiny Roman numerals on the railroad track outboard of the indices. This spectacular example with papers is beautifully understated and stealthily luxurious. A perfect daily/dress piece!
CONDITION:
9.5/10 minimal hairlines, no nicks/dents. Original Twinlock crown and Coronet-etched crystal. Crystal, dial, hands, indices, lume all pristine. Original bracelet and clasp crisp with minor hairlines. Last known service 2015 (RSC service card included). Movement exemplary with above-spec power reserve, high amplitude, negligible beat error and accurate to ±5 secs/day averaged from 6 timegrapher positions.
