WHY WE CURATED IT:
The most transformative watch in recent history. From 1945, Datejusts changed the face of watches—figuratively and literally. Dates used to be shown via pointer hands and scales, or as part of complicated full/perpetual calendars. Datejusts were first to pair just a date window at 3 o’clock (improving legibility especially with the Cyclops 1950s onwards) with an automatic calibre and water-resistant Oyster case. This practical formula was all anyone needed, as evidenced by uninterrupted success for 80 years, with more variations than any other Rolex line. The name “Datejust” is often cited to mean “just the date,” but really refers to “justified date”—watchmaking speak for instant change at midnight, another Rolex first. Today, Datejusts are the most recognisable Rolex models alongside Submariners and Daytonas. With the white gold fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet, and less-common linen dial on this early 16014 (1977-1988), it’s very much quiet understatement and stealthy opulence—the perfect daily/dress piece.
CONDITION:
8/10 with shallow hairlines. Dial, hands and crystal have minor aging/marks, not very noticeable against the shimmery backdrop. Caseback still stickered. Long bracelet is stretched and can be restored, but we’d leave it for the quintessential vintage Rolex feel, supremely comfortable and no less robust. Movement excellent with over-spec power reserve, strong amplitude, insignificant beat error and accurate to ±5 secs/day averaged from 6 timegrapher positions.
