WHY WE CURATED IT:
There are many Cartier Tank shape variations across 106 years, but only 1 variation in structural functionality: the Basculante (aka Cabriolet depending on era). With a clever bracket-pivot architecture for flipping around to protect the glass/dial during sports (crystals were once fragile stuff). First launched in 1932, a year after JLC’s Reverso debut. Some say Cartier copied JLC, but we think a year isn’t enough to “copy”, improve upon, start production, and begin marketing/distribution/retail. Especially when the flipping axis and mechanisms are entirely different. In any case, Basculantes flip with half the parts, in half the thickness (a better “dress watch”; ironically how both are seen today), and adds a bonus upright “mini desk clock” feature. No, this is really its own thing. Relaunched by Cartier in the 90s (what you see here today) and never again since. The version here is the Small in steel, quartz-driven, and the most affordable Basculante today. Yet retaining all the charm, intrigue and beauty of a very collectible classic. In stellar serviced condition, with original strap, buckle, box and Cartier service papers (June 2024).
CONDITION:
9/10, excellent condition with the slightest hairlines, and minor marks on the reverse side. Crystal, dial, hands and cabochon pristine. Sharp caseback engravings. New aftermarket leather strap. Original Cartier croc strap (worn) included. Original Cartier buckle also excellent. Movement healthy, serviced by Cartier Japan and quartz-accurate.
