Universal Genève “Silver Ellipse” White Shadow Ref. 817051 (circa 1980s)
Universal Genève “Silver Ellipse” White Shadow Ref. 817051 (circa 1980s)
WHY WE CURATED IT:
Silver-dialed version of the UG “Blue Ellipse” we had previously. Equipped with an in-house quartz calibre, made in small numbers at the end of this model’s lifecycle during the late-stage era of UG. Emblematic of the brand’s last-ditch attempt to join the quartz revolution and even rarer than the microrotor automatics! Not a rip-off of Patek’s Ellipse, but this in fact inspired Patek. Designed by Gerald Genta, and followed by Patek two years later. An unsung hero from UG’s history, but now the target of collectors who are done with overhyped Polerouters, Tri-Compax and Nina Rindts. A fantastic specimen with a pristine warm silver dial. Looks and feels more expensive than it is and incredibly versatile whether as a daily or occasional special piece.
CONDITION:
9/10, with minimal signs of use/aging for the age. Crystal is scratch-/nick-free, with pristine dial, indices and hands. Bracelet has zero stretch but small soldering artefacts from what might have been a previous repair where it meets the case at 6:30. A small imperfection that’s easy to overlook on the wrist when 99% of everything else has such exquisite presentation. Movement in excellent health and quartz-accurate.
